DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE

A Kew Ten Film, Directed by Jodie Childers & Dan Messina (2006)

“For all the world’s turmoil, Pete never blinked on the question as to whether or not our humanity had enough love in its power to triumph over our addiction to our humanity” -Harry Belafonte

Runtime: 84 min.

& POST-SHOW PANEL DISCUSSION

Following the film and a brief intermission, a Q&A / Panel will tell stories of the film, Pete and Toshi, and the vibrant musical/sailing community emulated in countries around the world.

In the 1960s, American folksinger Pete Seeger & friends hatched an extraordinary plan to clean up the polluted Hudson River: build a reproduction of grand 18th century sloops that dotted the waterway connecting river ports to New York City, and hold concerts and waterfront festivals up and down the Hudson Valley. Down by the Riverside follows the unlikely story of sloop Clearwater with a ragtag musical crew, launched a movement and became the flagship of an environmental movement worldwide. An intimate portrait of Pete, his wife Toshi and the grassroots community they anchored for over 40 years, the film takes us on a musical and nautical odyssey, an unconventional campaign set to music that saved a beloved American waterway and prompted a green revolution. The tale of sloop Clearwater is a parable for our times, offering hope for a fractured nation and revealing how participation and imagination by ordinary committed people can not only solve environmental problems but transform how we relate not only to the earth but also to one another.
